Climate change and agriculture in the northeastern United States. My research in this area began during my doctoral research with Dr. V. Ernesto Mendez at the University of Vermont. In my subsequent post-doctoral fellowship with the USDA, I led several projects that are topically related, but are self-directed (in collaboration with several partners). Research activities include (1) a two-part survey in Vermont (2013 and 2016) on farmer perceptions of climate change and associated, on-farm best management practices, (2) a series of 45 interviews (2014 and 2016-2017) with farmers and agricultural advisors on agriculture and climate-risk, (3) two national-scale surveys (2016 and 2017) of USDA field staff on climate change perceptions and their professional use of weather and climate data, and (4) case studies of farmers in the northeast who are actively adapting to a changing climate (2016 and 2017). These projects use qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, and synthesis approaches.
Water management on Northeast vegetable farms. In collaboration with UVM Extension and regional agricultural industry organizations, I developed a program entitled Whole Farm Water. This multi-stage project is designed to increase water use efficiency in commercial Northeast vegetable operations. There are many unknowns about how and why farmers currently use water, and how those practices may change in an era of shifting precipitation patterns and changing regulatory landscapes. My work in this area falls into the following categories: (1) a survey of farmers to better understand current water management strategies; (2) on-farm data collection using water meters (to measure water use), soil moisture probes (to measure demand), and regionally available climate data (to measure demand); and (c) a review of water withdrawal regulations within the six New England states, specifically as they apply to commercial agriculture. Future work will include field trials to test the effects of different “irrigation cues” used by commercial farmers on agroecological outcomes (including yield, soil nutrient availability, etc.).
Local agriculture and food insecurity in Vermont. I developed a qualitative study under the supervision of Dr. Linda Berlin. The study examined how farmers play a critical role in helping individuals and families gain access to healthy, fresh, locally produced food. By better understanding how and why farmers work to address hunger in communities, Extension professionals can better support them to achieve the dual goals of food security and farm viability. We interviewed 15 farmers in 2012 to understand what strategies were being used to address hunger in Vermont.
