Rachel E. Schattman, Ph.D.
In January 2020, I will join the University of Maine faculty as Assistant Professor of Sustainable Agriculture. Until then, I serve as a Research Fellow with the USDA Northeast Climate Hub and as an Affiliate with the University of Vermont Extension Vegetable and Berry Program.
The goal of my work is to support farmers to be more resilient in a changing climate while protecting natural resources. My academic background is in agroecology, with a focus on sustainable management in vegetable production systems, sociology, community food security, and farm-based adaptive practices to climate change.
I have expertise in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research design and analysis, and a background in applied Participatory Action Research (PAR). My experience owning and managing a diversified vegetable farm informs my perspective and research focus.
